Sony Ericssons History
The History of Sony Ericsson
A very long time ago in Sweden there was a man who owned a business in the telecommunications industry fixing equipment, the company later began to manufacture phones under their own name, the year was 1885, the company was Ericsson and the man behind it was Lars Magnus Ericsson.
Ericsson left his post as CEO in 1903 but the company continued to make, maintain and sell Ericsson products and establishing themselves within the telecommunications industry, 1987 was the year that Ericsson built their first mobile handset.
On the other side of the world in 1945 in Tokyo a man by the name of Masaru Ibuka was busy starting up a new radio repair shop called Tokyo Telecommunications, they built Japans first ever Tape deck. In 1958 Tokyo Telecommunications changed their name to Sony which is now a household name and market leader in a vast number of different electrical products that are sold all over the world.
In 2001 Ericsson who were fairly successful in their own right, joined forces with world superpower Sony to become the telecommunication giant it is today. Sony already a market leader in many different areas of technology were making small steps in the mobile phone industry. They had the technology and made some very good quality phones, some of their games were far more advanced than anything any other provider had to offer. Sony and Ericsson wanted to not just make decent phones and have the status they did in the mobile phone industry, they wanted a large percentage of market share, and that’s exactly what they did.
Even though they were both big in their own right and they started their partnership in 2001 and did make some very good phones in the first two years, they had to wait till late 2003 to see their first profit.
As things got better and they started to rise within the telecommunications world they came out with technology that was unique to them. Sony Ericsson were some of the first to have memory chips within the handsets, from 2003 all their phones were using GMS technology, their Smartphone’s came with some of the first technologies that others followed with such as touch screen (the P900 had a touch screen in 2003 long before iphone’s), email abilities, internet and were also one of the first to use colour screens, they had one of the first if not THE first Smartphone on the market.
Sony Ericsson changed the game in many different areas; the W800i walkman phone was the first in the walkman range from Sony Ericsson and had a 2GB memory card which was as big as an iPod Nano. The K800i was the first phone from Sony Ericsson in the cyber shot range and it had a 3.2 Megapixel camera at a time when there were still digital cameras in the shots with this spec. The W910i was loaded with a motion sensor that meant you were able to change tracks by simply shaking the phone, a feature which to this day is only used by Sony Ericsson.
Moving forward to now and we have cyber shot phones casually quoting massive 8 Megapixel cameras, the Xperia is the first Sony Ericsson phone using Windows operating system and was the first have a mini USB port along with all the other rich features the phone comes with. Waiting to be released is the Idou which has an unbelievable 12 Megapixel camera in a time when most digital cameras are using the same if not less.
Sony Ericsson are now standing tall at the top of the mobile phone industry with only one real competitor, they release mobile phones of all different styles and specs and prices to suit anyone no matter how advance their technical knowledge.
